Makin History

The Legacy Behind Liverpool Legal

Liverpool Legal stands on strong foundations — built on a legacy of legal excellence, fierce advocacy, and unwavering service to the people of Liverpool and beyond.

As the successor practice to E. Rex Makin & Co, we are proud to carry forward a tradition that has defined legal representation in this city for over seven decades. Founded in 1949 by the late Rex Makin, Liverpool’s most distinguished solicitor, the firm became known throughout the North West — and nationally — for its involvement in major cases, complex legal challenges and landmark public matters.

But beyond high-profile headlines, the firm’s reputation was founded on something simpler: dedicated legal support for ordinary people when they needed it most.

A Legacy of Legal Leadership

Rex Makin began his firm from modest beginnings in Hackins Hey, off Dale Street. With drive, intellect and an eye for justice, the firm quickly expanded — both in size and reputation. In 1978, the firm moved to Whitechapel, at the heart of Liverpool City Centre, becoming a familiar and respected presence in the city’s legal and civic life.

As well as his work in law, Rex Makin was known for his wit, wisdom and outspoken views as a weekly columnist for the Liverpool Echo. He was deeply connected to the cultural and political life of Liverpool — never afraid to challenge injustice and always committed to the betterment of the communities he served.

Over the years, E. Rex Makin & Co became synonymous with:

  • High-profile legal representation
  • Unusual and complex cases
  • Access to justice for all — regardless of status
  • Professionalism combined with fierce client loyalty

From E. Rex Makin & Co to Liverpool Legal

In keeping with that tradition, Liverpool Legal Services Limited (‘Liverpool Legal’) was established as the successor firm to E. Rex Makin & Co. We honour the past — and embrace the future — by continuing to provide trusted legal advice and determined representation for individuals, families, businesses, and organisations.

The firm is led by Directors Gill Scales and Paul Currie, and supported by Consultant Solicitor Advocate Robin Makin — son of Rex Makin — who brings over 35 years of post-qualification experience, including Higher Courts advocacy.

A Modern Practice with Historic Principles

At Liverpool Legal, we remain true to the principles that guided the firm from its earliest days:

  • Determination to achieve the best possible outcome for our clients
  • Clarity in the advice we give, no matter how complex the issue
  • Access to justice for individuals, families, and communities
  • Trust and discretion, built over decades of loyal service
  • Adaptability, offering modern solutions to today’s legal challenges

Our work spans everything from everyday legal needs like wills, property transactions, and personal injury claims to high-value litigation and complex commercial matters.

Looking Forward

While our name has changed, our commitment remains the same. We continue to act with the same spirit of service, rigour and excellence that clients of E. Rex Makin & Co knew and valued. We are proud of where we’ve come from — and excited about where we’re going.

At Liverpool Legal, Makin history isn’t just about the past — it’s about continuing a legacy of legal service that puts clients first and delivers results with integrity.
